As some of you already know, my mom was in a very serious riding accident recently. We were having a lovely trail ride when her horse spooked and bolted. My mom was thrown, and was airlifted to Fairfax Hospital, where they have an excellent trauma unit. She sustained a broken neck, and broken sacrum, and bleeding on the brain. She was wearing a helmet. The surgeon said if she had not been wearing it, she would not have survived.
She is now stable, and has been transferred to Mt. Vernon Hospital, where they have a top-notch brain injury and rehabilitation program. Each day she gets a little bit better. Miraculously, she was not paralyzed, and may even make a full recovery. She recognizes her family now, and knows our names. She is taking a few steps with a walker each day.
I want to thank everyone who has sent us good wishes, prayers, emails, flowers, food, and all kinds of support. You have no idea how helpful this has been during this time. I spend 12-14 hours by her bedside, and I can tell you, it is exhausting, both mentally and physically. Thank you for keeping us in your thoughts, and I will keep you updated on her progress.

UPDATE!
My mom is doing very well, and is almost fully recovered from her injuries. She has to wear her neck brace for several more weeks, and continue with her physical and occupational therapies, but will be back home in a matter of weeks. Such a miracle, and a lesson to all of you who refuse to wear a helmet!!! Please always wear one. I always do. : )
